A rotary shank lets a car turn through 360 degrees in a rotary dump while remaining coupled. These couplers mate with operational Prototype Couplers.

A typical unit coal train uses a rotary coupler at one end of each car, with the rotary ends facing the same direction. This arrangement allows individual cars to rotate for unloading without separating the train.

The rotary head is a dummy coupler. Pair it with a working knuckle so the train can be coupled and uncoupled; two dummy rotary heads cannot perform that operation together.
