Usage and compatibility notes
A steam locomotive’s pilot puts the coupler in plain sight. A scale head and a carefully fitted pocket help this small detail look at home beside the rest of the model.
Many prototype steam pilots use a short coupler shank pinned into a compact pocket, rather than the longer shank and draft gear arrangement found on a freight car. The Spectrum 4-6-0 and prototype photos illustrate the difference between a conventional model mounting and that compact arrangement.
Check electrical isolation before fitting a metal coupler to a brass or die-cast locomotive. Pilot and tender pockets can be connected to opposite rail polarities, so a direct metal connection between locomotives may create a short. The mounting arrangement matters as much as the coupler itself.
For a working pilot installation, the ES1P87K uses a modified shank pinned into the RS3P87 pocket. The printed-resin pocket provides electrical isolation and mounts to the pilot beam through a 3/32-inch-diameter post at its rear. One example is the Spectrum 2-8-0 installation, which also uses a replacement handrail, a brass-wire cut lever and Alan Gibson 4 mm shoulderless handrail knobs as supports.
Where the existing pocket needs to stay, the EC87DC resin dummy coupler offers another approach. It is easy to trim and drill to fit, and it mates with our working couplers. At least one knuckle in a pair must open: two EC87DC dummy couplers cannot couple or uncouple together.
